Outside the house he was respected and admired. Inside the house, everyone wished he would act differently. They wanted him to make an attempt to become more a part of the world that was evolving around him. But which part were they talking about? As the members of his family wanted him to become involved in what was going in the country after the war, he decided, without telling them, that he would become a member of the St. Vincent de Paul society, which was heavily involved with helping the poor, especially at this time when a very unpopular war was ending, and many didn’t know where they would live or how they would survive. This was the beginning of his full time efforts among the poor. He would build this apostolate for the next seven years, until the day he died. He developed a habit of meeting with the members of his St. Vincent de Paul Society at the Church of La Consolata, under the clock, where they would set up schedules and appointments to help the poor. It became known as the meeting place. He has in his notes, “6 o’clock by the Consolata Clock.” This referred to the time and place where Pier Giorgio would begin his pilgrimage to the poor.

Pier Giorgio never considered his father’s wealth his own; rather he broke the unspoken rule of never being in debt, as he begged and borrowed lire from whoever he could get to loan money to him. He would give those in need his last lire. Speaking about the poor, he said he saw a special light surrounding the poor and unfortunate, a light those who have no need do not have. He explained that to an associate when trying to explain his love and ardent desire to help those who were in need and were not able to help themselves. There were times when he borrowed a little from his father and from his mother. But he was sure to keep a strict accounting of all he borrowed.

From the time he was a little boy, Pier Giorgio would work in the garden helping the gardener. One day, as he was picking wild flowers to bring to his grand mother, he saw a lay worker approaching the garden. She explained she was picking a bouquet to place on the altar in the chapel. Little Pier Giorgio walked over to the woman, with a rose in his tiny hand and called out to her, “Sister!” She insisted, “I am not a Sister.” But Pier Giorgio insisted, “Sister, take this rose to Jesus for me.” The lay worker saw the look in the child’s eyes, and she said something which would become a prophecy: “You’ll see that one day Jesus will make you a Saint.”
